Facebook says, “Don’t mind us, we’re just whoring out your photos”
But it’s OK. Really!
See, according to Facebook it’s all part of the acceptable use policy you agreed to. No, I’m not kidding. That red box above contains an ad that was displayed to Peter Smith, who no doubt agrees that the woman in the image is hot — although he suspected she wasn’t single. You guessed it, that’s his wife – consultant Cheryl Smith.
Is this not the same Facebook that just went back and retooled a TOS that users found objectionable? Didn’t they just finish apologizing and kissing our butts over the crapstorm that ensued?
Here’s what the Facebook settings page has to say:
Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user’s friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules.
All you have to do to prevent this is sign in to Facebook and click through to (get ready) -> Settings -> Privacy -> News Feed and Wall -> Facebook Ads -> Appearance in Facebook Ads and click “no one.” Unless, of course, you want to be semifamous and have your picture used to push some garbage product or website without your knowledge. (note: when I tried to make this change just now, the site returned an error. oh, and it might not work in Firefox either due to a ‘bug.’)
I guess since we can turn this abomination off we shouldn’t get too worked up about it. Still, it’s pretty damn unsavory to use someone’s friend’s face to advertise a product and give the appearance that that friend might endorse it.
Yes, if it had been my wife’s face staring back at me I would have had a good laugh. And when I stopped, I would have been right pissed that Facebook thinks this qualifies as “acceptable use.”

Hi
sorry this article is a little bit badly researched.
the ad you see is within an facebook application. its using an application internal ad system.
the ad has (almost) the same permission as the applications.
one of this permissions is to display pictures to you of friend of yours.
the picture is not coming from this ad network. the app is simply showing you an random image of your friends (to enstrength the social binding to the ad)
the changement of the setting cannot change anything to this.
this “flaw” is by definition in how ads work within fb apps

Yeah I went to http://www.facebook.com/privacy/?view=feeds&tab=ads
and it is just blank, nothing there.
I am using Firefox.
Goto Settings- Privacy- News Feed and wall- Facebook Ads- Appearance in Facebook Ads- Select No One
Yeah I went to http://www.facebook.com/privacy/?view=feeds&tab=ads
and it is blank – no option to turn off this setting.
I am using Firefox.
I’m getting tired of hunting down obscure privacy settings and blocking stupid people and quizzes.
@doh If you have adblock on, disable it temporarily, it worked for me.
I had the same problem in FF that the page was blank. Temporarily disable Ad Block, and it will show up. I’m assuming the path has /ads/ in it, so ABP will block it.
@anon
Thanks for the hint!
Interesting enough, I actually did find a photo of myself in an ad on a page separate from Facebook once. Did some sleuthing and found a cookie from an ad company with my fb user id# inside it. Turns out, some of those ads inside facebook apps (not apps made by facebook) set that cookie with your user id. Then, when you visit a page outside facebook that uses the same ad company, they can check that cookie, grab that little thumbnail of your profile pic (which they no doubt cached on their server), and serve up an ad with your own picture inside it on an ad outside of facebook.
I don’t know why they would want to do that anyway. It really crept me out when I saw it, and definitely kept me from ever even considering clicking on the ad.
Mine was turned on to “family and friends” I had to change it to “no one”
The greatest benefit of Facebook is that it has many groups on the site that you can join. So if you are interested in Chicago Cubs you can research Chicago Cubs in the groups section and you will be able to find friends on there that like the Cubs. This is just one example, I know that you can join groups of your favorite football team, television show, or whatever you want for the most part! If you can’t find a group for your interest, you can simply create one!

I use FF and it worked just fine for me. Thank you for letting us know how to fix it.
@Diana
You are welcome Diana. Keep visiting the site and keep rocking.
Thanks for the great tip, “Goto Settings- Privacy- News Feed and wall- Facebook Ads- Appearance in Facebook Ads- Select No One” I don’t know if I had already done this, but when I checked, it already said “No one.”
By the way, Anon, @doh, Ad-block only blocks you from seeing an ad and misses the point – unless you block it, FB and advertisers can use your photos in ads of their choosing.
Seems to me as much as Facebook likes to kick people off and not tell them why they should be kicking themselves off for this one. Hope they don’t tell themselves why
