Apple’s latest beast based operating system, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, will be available earlier than expected. This Friday, August 28, in fact. Rather than filling the operating system with fistfuls of new features, Apple says its worked on the architecture of OS X to make it quicker, lighter and neater. Mac OS X Snow Leopard will take up half the space of OS X 10.5.7. That means you’ll regain up to 7GB of disk space. Continue reading…

64-Bit Chrome Emerges for Linux First

Linux_Chrome

As open-source proponents will tell you, there are several advantages to running Linux, and the open-source camp is about to have another bragging point, at least if you’re a Chrome user. Google Chrome will soon be available in 64-bit form, but only for Linux.

“The V8 team did some amazing work this quarter building a working 64-bit port. After a handful of changes on the Chromium side, I’ve had Chromium Linux building on 64-bit for the last few weeks,” said Chrome engineer Dean McNamee. Continue reading…

China Jails Four for Microsoft XP Piracy

A Chinese court has jailed four people for spreading their bootleg “Tomato Garden” version of Microsoft’s Windows XP program, in what the Xinhua news agency called the nation’s biggest software piracy case.

Hong Lei, the creator of the downloadable “Tomato Garden Windows XP” software, was jailed for three and a half years on Thursday by a court in Suzhou in eastern China, Xinhua reported, citing local media. Continue reading…

Wikipedia Mobile: free Wikipedia app for your iPhone

The traditional pub quiz faces many threats. Now joining the music-round-destroying Shazam app, Wikipedia has launched an official iPhone app.

The free application, obviously named Wikipedia Mobile, is not the first Wikipedia app in the iTunes App Store but it is the first to be officially sanctioned.

The Wikimedia Foundation which oversees Wikipedia says the app is easier to use than having to jump in to Safari to flick through pages. It’s killer feature is keeping your searched pages saved to refer back to. Continue reading…

Judge rules that DVD copying software is illegal

real_networks

American software company RealNetworks has been banned from selling a program that lets people make copies of their DVDs, in a US court decision that could have far-reaching implications.

After a year-long case over the legality of the company’s RealDVD software, a district court in San Francisco ruled that Real had violated America’s copyright laws and granted a preliminary injunction against Real to prevent it selling the program.

The ruling stops Real from selling RealDVD, a piece of software that allows to make back-up copies of their movie discs and save them to their computer. Although free DVD ripping software is readily available online, Real raised the hackles of Hollywood executives in 2008 because it paid for a license to the DVD Copy Control Association, believing that it could be interpreted to allow the services they wanted to provide. Goolge Voice Web App To Bypass iPhone Approval Reqs

Last month iPhone rejected Google Voice app from its App Store which forced the FCC to intervene. Now according to reports from New york times, Google is working on an iPhone web app version of Google Voice which will not have to go through the iPhone approval process.

According to New York Times:

“Google says it is readying a replacement for the Google Voice app that will offer exactly the same features as the rejected app—except that it will take the form of a specialized, iPhone-shaped Web page. For all intents and purposes, it will behave exactly the same as the app would have; you can even install it as an icon on your Home screen.” Continue reading…

iTunes 9 to carry Blu-ray support?

iTunes 9 to carry Blu-ray support?
iTunes 9 could center on the addition of Blu-ray movie playback, according to a rumor floated on Saturday. A veteran source for BGR says that the Apple jukebox software, which currently can’t play any videos on disc, will gain support for the HD movie format. It would also reportedly gain some level of interaction with Facebook, Twitter and potentially the Internet radio service Last.fm. It would also supposedly be possible to reorganize iPhone apps.
When iTunes 9 will ship isn’t mentioned, though the company normally reserves significant updates to the media software for special music events in September or October.
A move towards Blu-ray video would downplay the importance of DVD Player for disc playback but would also be a shift in attitudes at Apple. Company chief Steve Jobs is well known for having referred to Blu-ray as a “bag of hurt” based on the licensing and copy protection needed to play videos, and the company as a whole has normally preferred sending customers towards 720p videos on iTunes. Upgrading to 1080p at its online store may be difficult, however, as the files are normally much larger and often won’t start playing quickly without a very fast Internet connection.
However, the rumor appears just as Apple is rumored to be extending the iMac with a pair of mysterious but important new features with its next update. While Blu-ray hasn’t been directly linked to the update, speculation has it as one of the most likely new additions.

Apple Bans Prolific Developer from App Store

Apple Bans Prolific Developer from App Store

Khalid Shaikh’s company has developed more than 900 apps for the iTunes, and has raked in thousands of dollars a day in the process. Now Apple is banning the developer from its App Store. While no one really seems to be defending the developer on the grounds of quality, the complaints apparently stem from copyright issues.

“The persistent nature of such complaints has led us to conclude that you are entering into the representations and warranties in the iDP Agreement in bad faith by misrepresenting that you have all the necessary rights for your submissions,”

Apple said in a statement to the developer.

Of course the whole thing once again calls into question the same vetting process which banned Google voice and allowed and then banned that now-infamous baby-shaking app. Nine-hundred apps is a lot of copyright infringement to slip under the radar in the first place, right?

Skype could be disconnected by legal hang up

Skype-Logo

Our favourite VoIP service Skype could be in serious trouble. A lawsuit brought against its owners eBay could end with the software being broken for good. eBay brought Skype for a mind-blowing $2.6bn (£1.57bn) back in 2005 but is stuck in a legal tussle with the firm’s founders.

Skype creators Janus Frils and Niklas Zennstrom still hold a licence to some of the core technology at the heart of Skype. The tech, called Joltid, is a vital part of the service. Continue reading…

Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key

windows7_logo

Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file.

The news comes from various Chinese forums who state that you can already pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style.

The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in
Windows Vista. Another point to note is that the key is a master one, which can be used to activate other OEM branded installations, like ones from Dell, HP or indeed Lenovo. Continue reading…

“SI Swimsuit 2009″ iPhone app is the number-one paid lifestyle application in Apple’s App Store.

SwimsuitApp_0

Time Inc., which publishes Sports Illustrated, home of the famed Swimsuit Issue juggernaut, announced today that one day after launch its “SI Swimsuit 2009″ iPhone app is the number-one paid lifestyle application in Apple’s App Store.

The app, developed by Acton, Massachusetts-based Azuki Systems, retails at $2.99 and is the first one by Sports Illustrated. It offers photos and video of 20 models, as well as a calendar feature that allows users to apply photos for each month and track schedules and scores for six sports teams.

Funnily enough, the top three apps in the paid Lifestyle category, for now at least, are SI’s Swimsuit app, Ajnag’s “Cannibis” app (which helps you locate medicinal marijuana collectives), and Digital Outcrop’s “Mixologist – 7900 Drink & Cocktail Recipes.” I guess this says a lot about who’s currently cruising the Lifestyle category for iPhone entertainment.

But the Swimsuit app has enjoyed a swift ascent to the top rung—a Time Inc. spokesperson said the app shot to number six within hours, then went to number two, then hit number one by its first full day in the app store.

Five Essential Tips for Editing the Windows Registry

Five Essential Tips for Editing the Windows Registry

Editing the Windows Registry has the potential to improve your system’s performance, but making a mistake can destroy Windows and cause you great distress. Here are five tips for keeping yourself anxiety-free—and for keeping your PC alive.

  • The best protection from Registry hassles is to have a current full-system backup. You ought to create one right now, even if you’re not planning to mess with your Registry anytime soon. For a tutorial, read “how to Prevent a Data Disaster”
  • Before you open the Registry cleaner, use ERUNT (emergency Recovery Utility NT; to back up the Registry. I know, it’s redundant, since the Registry cleaner will back up any changes it makes, and since you (should) already have a full system backup. But having a separate Registry backup will make it easier to restore your system quickly if something goes wrong. Continue reading…

Linux Users Should Say: Goodbye Apple

Linux Users Should Say: Goodbye Apple

I’ve owned a lot of iPods.

Not anymore.

For the longest time, I could use gtkpod to seamlessly access my iPods from my Ubuntu desktop. It initially took some reverse-engineering effort to understand the iPod’s data format to be able to access it from non-iTunes software, but it was possible. All of a sudden, Apple is trying everything they can to prohibit interopability.

First, they encrypted the firmware, blocking the use of third-party firmware like Rockbox and iPod Linux. This doesn’t bother me much, as I always prefered the original Apple firmware anyway.

Then, in August 2007, they added a new hash to the database to block non-iTunes software. This was quicky reverse-engineered and support was added to gtkpod once again. Continue reading…
